University of Scotland Carnegie PhD Scholarships 2023

The Carnegie Trust offers a number of scholarships each year to academically excellent candidates who are intending to study on a PhD programme at any University in Scotland

Award

The scholarships cover tuition fees, a maintenance allowance and a research expenses allowance. The awards are tenable for three years for full-time study and up to six years for part-time study.  The tenure period may be extended to a maximum of 42 months (or 84 months for part-time students), but only when a case for such an extension has been made at the time of nomination and approved by the Trust as part of the award.

Any subject area will be considered for Carnegie PhD Scholarships.

The Carnegie Trust hopes to fund a minimum of 12 scholarships (across all the Scottish Universities)  for doctoral studies starting in 2023-2024.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a First Class Honours undergraduate degree from an eligible Scottish University. This First-Class Honours degree must be in a subject related to the field of the proposed doctoral studies. Students in their final year of an undergraduate degree who are expected to obtain a First-Class Honours degree may also apply,  but they will be required to withdraw from the competition if they fail to graduate with a First.  Please note that no exemptions are made to this requirement except in faculties which do not award Honours e.g. Medicine, where the equivalent standard will be expected.

Applicants who are in receipt of a Government-funded Research Studentship, Research Council award or comparable scholarship will not be considered.

Applicants for the scholarship must have applied formally for admission to a PhD programme of study commencing in September or October 2023 at the University of Edinburgh, must have identified a potential supervisor (and informed their supervisor that they will be applying to Carnegie) and also made a scholarship application, all by the University’s internal closing date of 24th January 2023 (see section on Applying).  If an applicant is selected for nomination to the Carnegie Trust the supervisor will be required to complete a section in the Carnegie Trust application portal (see Notification and next steps paragraph below).

Applicants may only be nominated by one University.

Notification and next steps

All applicants will be informed whether or not they are being nominated to the Trust by 28 February 2023.

Nominated applicants will be provided with access to the Carnegie Trust’s application portal mid-February and must complete the online application process by 5pm on 28 February 2023, which includes seeking the endorsement of their prospective supervisor.  In addition the prospective supervisor must upload an Institutional Statement of Support completed by a senior academic in the relevant School, also by 5pm on 28 February 2023.  The Institutional Statement of Support must include the signature of a senior manager within Student Systems and Administration , who will confirm the nominee is one of the University’s chosen candidates.

The Carnegie Trust will make the final decisions and nominated applicants will be informed of the outcome by the end of May 2023.
