Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for Imo state governorship election, Emeka Ihedioha, has been declared winner of the poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec).
Ihedioha polled 273,404 votes to defeat the Action Alliance candidate (AA), Uche Nwosu, who polled 190,360 votes, while Senator Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came third, with 96,458 votes.
The former deputy speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives also battled with Senator Ifeanyi Ararume of the All Progressives Congress Grand Alliance (APGA) for the highest office in Imo.
Returning officer for Imo, Francis Atunta, announced that the total registered voters across the state’s 27 local government areas was 2,221,008 and the total accredited voters was 823,743.
He said a total of 25,130 votes were cancelled across the state with total valid votes as 714,355 while the total votes cast is 739,485.
