The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it measures to check mate vote buying will shock votebuyers as it has put in place measures to checkmate the act.
INEC’s national commissioner and chairman for information and voter education, Festus Okoye, while speaking on Sunday night during an interactive session with the media, disclosed that thecommission will not disclose the strategies it has adopted for the coming general elections.
“The other strategies we have designed will not be made known so that they will not go ahead of us,”Okoye said.
The official disclosed that the commission would not collate and transmit the results of the elections electronically, as such measure does not have a place in the nation’s electoral law.
“We are collating and transmitting manually in accordance with the law. Everything is manual collation and manual transmission of results.
“INEC is aware that there is a bill before the National Assembly that may likely lead to the amendment of the law,” he said.
“It is important for INEC to pilot in e-collation and transmission of result so that any day the National Assembly amends the law, we will be ready to do that.
Meanwhile, INEC has warned journalists, social media users and accredited election observers not publish results of the forthcoming elections if not endorsed by the body, as such act might lead to jail term.
According to Okoye, only returning officers are mandated to announce results of the exercise.
